Worker’s union stages sit-in protest against war

Date Posted: 2004-01-22

An Okinawan workers’ union is calling on bystanders to join their sit-in protest against sending Japanese Self-Defense Forces to Iraq. The demonstration began Monday noon in front of the Prefectural Office Building in Naha, with union chairman Yoshimasa Karimata leading the protest. “There’s still a war going on in Iraq, and people die. We must raise big voices in Okinawa against the self-defense force going to Iraq,” Karimata said.

The demonstrators are carrying banners opposing the deployment. They are also shouting slogans, and invite passers-by to join. “Japan has a very strong constitution against war. Our self-defense forces should not go there,” a demonstrator said.
