Date Posted: 2004-01-22

Naniwa Express, a band that many regard as the best Jazz/fusion band in Japan is set to perform in two live concerts at Club D-Set in Naha today and Friday. The band is accompanied by singer Mimi, the Japanese lead vocalist of re-united Brothers Johnson band of the U.S. who is also scheduled to perform with Larry Graham soon.

Naniwa Express was formed in 1977 by Ko (Bass), Kazuhiko (Guitar) and Keinji (Keys), the group did their first US tour in 1979. With Rikiya (Dr) and Makoto (Sax/Keys) later joining the group in 81, they signed the record deal with CBS Sony in ‘82. Doing more than 160 shows a year nationwide, the group soon established their reputation as the best jazz/fusion band in Japan. Known for sharing the stage with many artists including a major jazz trumpet artist, Terumasa Hino, with whom they did a successful concert at Tokyo’s Budokan in ‘84.

The group decided to split in ‘86 and each member went on to pursued their solo careers. In 2000, 14 years after the split, the members got back together again for a limited reunion tour which led them to the release a new album in 2003.
