Warm winter weather delays Motobu cherry blossoms

Date Posted: 2004-01-15

Exceptionally warm weather is delaying the blooming of cherry trees on Mt. Yaedake in Motobu Town. The annual Yaedake Cherry Blossom Festival is scheduled to begin from this weekend, but local officials say there are very few cherry blossoms to admire yet. “Because of warm weather only a third of our cherry trees have blossoms. I think it will take another two weeks before they are in full bloom,” Yeadake Cherry Blossom Festival Committee Chairman Keikou Kishimoto said. “The cherry trees need a little bit cold weather first to get them blossoming, and we have yet to see that cold spell this year,” he explains.
