Nearly 600 runners participate in 100 km road race

Fewer than half the runners in the 14th Wide Marathon on Miyako finished the grueling race on Sunday. Some593 runners began the race, but only 222 were able to finish the ultra-long 100km-long race within the 14-hour time limit.

The fastest runner was Kenji Nishimura from Kochi Prefecture, who finished the race in 7 hours 29 minutes and 42 seconds. Yoko Yamasawa from Ibaragi Prefecture was the fastest woman at 8 hours 44 minutes and 19 seconds.

Two other events, 50 km and 21 km races, were run concurrently with a total of 320 entries. Hiroshi Matsumoto won the 50 km race, and Shinichi Miyashita was the fastest on the 21 km course.
