Group of young men fight police at Kokusai Street

Date Posted: 2004-01-15

A group of young men celebrating their “Coming of Age Day” rolled out a large barrel of sake and started a drinking party in the middle of Mutsumibashi Intersection of Kokusai Street in Naha City on Monday. About 150 policemen arrived at the scene, and when the youth ignored their repeated orders to move away, the police decided to remove the group by force.

After some fighting, police hauled the whole group to the jail, and is investigating each one separately for possible charges. When questioned, one of the arrested youths reportedly told the police that the only reason for their action was that “we wanted all Naha people to pay attention to us.”

Local shop owners certainly paid attention, but not as favorably as the young men possibly had hoped for. “It’s a shame. Those kids have just entered adulthood but they still act like small kids,” one store manager commented. He said that he and other shops in the area clearly lost business as tourists were frightened away by the youths’ unruly behavior.
