Okinawa rainy season ends

Date Posted: 2003-06-28

The rainy season in Okinawa officially ended last weekend, two days earlier than on average. The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory declared the rainy season over at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Officials at the observatory said that the rainy cloud front had permanently moved north to Kyushu marking the start of the rainy season in mainland Japan.

Okinawa has now entered into a high-pressure area, indicating that the long hot summer has really begun, with daily temperatures constantly over 30 degrees centigrade (90 degrees Fahrenheit)..

Sunday also marked the day of summer solstice or the longest day of the year. As the beach season gets under way, officials warn people to drink enough fresh water to avoid dehydration, and to be sure to apply strong enough sunscreen when they go to a beach. Sunburn and heat stroke are no strangers to Okinawa, and the season is long.
