Police to increase manpower in fighting rising crime

Date Posted: 2003-12-25

The National Police Agency in Tokyo plans to hire an additional 10,000 police officers over the next three years in order to control increasing crime, especially in urban areas. The coming year’s budget contains funds for hiring 3,500 additional officers. Of those, Okinawa Prefecture will get 45. “We actually wanted more, but we will beef up security and our crime fighting in other ways,” a spokesman for Okinawa Prefectural Police said. Okinawa has currently 552 police officers; that will increase to 597 next year.
