Or, maybe you have not yet made your decision... For all the readers who want to enjoy the last day of 1999, and celebrate the dawn of the year 2000 in grand style, Japan Update hereby introduces a variety of occasions at different places, that will be held on December 31st.

Clubs & Live House

For those who want to party down the night of the New Year’s eve, nightclubs and Live music houses might be the good destination. Although many clubs in Okinawa City and Naha City are not planning to throw special parties and events for the New Year’s eve, they will be open for many people to celebrate the new millennium’s arrival.

The Neo Manhattan will be one place to dance into the first day of Year 2000 (Admission: 300 yen from 6:00pm-9:00pm, 1500 yen or $15 for women after 9:00pm, 1500 yen or $15 for men before 12:00am, 2000 yen for men after midnight).

Al's Place offers an alternative for the big evening. A live performance by one rock band known as Full Circle will be featured on its stage. On December 31st, no cover charge will be paid at the door, and no reservations will be accepted. There will also be free champagne for all customers.

Restaurants & Bars

For those looking for a place to have fun with smaller crowds, a more mature atmosphere and good food, several parties at restaurants and bars may be a good choice. Many restaurants and cocktail bars will host parties for the year 2000.

The restaurant 3F, situated on third floor of American Village in Mihama, Chatan, will present "The Latin New Year's Eve Party". A Live performance by "Caramba!" will be featured. The admission is ¥1999, and that includes 1 drink and "Toshikoshi-Soba" (Year Crossing Noodles) which are eaten with a wish for long life. The party will begin at 11:30pm. The huge parking lots around the American Village are an advantage, especially for New Year’s eve diners. For more details, call 983-7111.

Soul Revolution music bar in Naha City will present The New Year Eve Party. This will be the last event to be held at the present location. The restaurant will be moving to a new location in Wakasa, Naha City, by mid-January. This New Year party will begin at 9:00pm. There are no tickets for the party; just pay for the drinks and food you consume. For more information, call 868-8192.

Another place where pleasure and merriment will be on the menu is Gourmet Town in Mihama, Chatan. Champagne and soft drinks will be available for everyone to drink as much as they want! Soba noodles called "Toshikoshi Soba", which are traditionally eaten on the new year's eve to pray for health during the year, will also prepared. Tickets are ¥2000 in advance and ¥2500 at the door. For more information, call 936-9306.

Sauce will present “Party 2000” for soul and salsa music and spicy food lovers. The party will start at 9:00pm and a live music performance by “Latin Connection” will be the main attraction. Free champagne will be served during the countdown before midnight.

Hotels

Because of the confusion that can be caused by the YK2 problem on the 31st, and also due to an expected excessive number of visitors, many hotels are not willing to welcome visitors apart from their lodgers to their parties on the New Year's eve. However, there are still some hotels that will accept visitors to party along with their guests. Kanucha Bay Hotel in Nago City will host the countdown party at Beach Pool inside the hotel. 1999 illuminated trees are on display in the hotel and the lighting ceremony for the 2000th tree that commemorates the year 2000 is scheduled to be held that night. A laser show and live music entertainment, coupled with a lottery, are part of the event as well. The party will start at 11:00pm and end at 12:30pm. Tickets are ¥2000 for adults and ¥1000 for children. At door, the additional fee will be added. Kanucha Hotel will host other special events, including a helicopter flight and the rising-sun cruising during the first week of January. For further details, call 0980-55-8880.

Laguna Garden Hotel in Ginowan City will present its own countdown party at the bar lounge called Padol on the 13th floor. The celebration will start at 10:0pm. Live music entertainment and bingo will feature during the party. Tickets are ¥3000 for adults and ¥2000 for children. If you have any questions, call 897-2121.

To avoid any inconveniences, it is better to call and make sure that a hotel accepts visitors before heading out for it. Ramada Renaissance Resort Hotel in Onnna Village, Nikko Alivila Hotel in Yomitan Village, Okuma Beach Hotel in Kunigami Village, Tomarin in Naha City will be hosting their guests for special New Year’s events.

Amusement Parks

The Southeast Botanical gardens in Okinawa City has something for families. Before the countdown party, the musical “Beauty and the Beast" (3 times a day), The "Fantasy Pageant Parade" (2 times a day), and "Water fantasy" (3 times a day) will all be going on at the Gardens. Following a lighting ceremony at 6:10pm, the countdown party will begin. The entertainment will include fireworks, a laser show, and bingo until 2:00am. Food booths offering a variety of snacks are already set up at the celebration site. For more information, call 867-3715.

On the New Year’s eve, especially at night, many people will go out to share a moment of celebration with others. Traffic on the streets will be hazardous ar times, and a lot of congestion is expected. The first safety measure should be to make sure that you are not behind the wheel if you are drunk. Japan Update wishes a Happy New Millennium/Year to all readers.
