Cessna Aircraft Crashes into Kadeana Air Base Munitions Storage Area

Date Posted: 1999-12-17

Last Thursday, December 9th 1999, at about 4:30 PM, a Cessna 172 aircraft assigned to the Kadena Aero Club, was forced to make an emergency landing in the munitions storage area of the Kadena Air Base due to reported engine troubles. There were four people on board the plane when it came down, but they suffered no serious injuries.

During a press conference held later that evening, Kadena Air Base’s Commander, General Smith apologized for the accident and any possible apprehensions it may have caused among the local population. He said the aircraft took off at about 4:20 PM from Kadena. The pilot reached an altitude of about 1000ft when he started experiencing engine problems. He then decided to head back for Kadena. But after making a judgment on his chances to reach the nearest runway on the Air Base, and discovering that he could not make it, the pilot chose to crash-land the aircraft on a road in the munitions storage area of Kadena.

General Smith praised the pilot for having made a wise and timely decision. The Kadena Aero Club is a civilian club that provides training and instruction for about 190 members, all of them being American servicemen and SOFA status civilians. The Cessna 172 that came down is a non-military aircraft. The club has been asked to stop flying while the cause of the last accident is under investigation.
