Summit Committee to sponsor English conversation classDate Posted: 1999-08-27 Local residents busily gearing themselves for several levels of conversation class have already shown their enthusiasm, and for the 31 already enrolled who meet every Tuesday and Thursday, classes last from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Many of the students are public servants, cram school teachers, but with one notable inclusion, the class also includes the wife of the Nago City mayor. Thursday saw 21 people attend the conversation class, with volunteer instructors Thomas Chouichi Shimabukuro and Samuel Epperson, who concentrates on English pronunciation and visual examples of expression, overseeing the new students. Epperson, presently manager at the Camp Schwab Credit Union branch office, is planning to retire from that position in about two years. After, he would like to dedicate himself to more volunteer community work, while perusing his favorite hobbies, sea kayaking, bike and archery. On the other hand, Thomas Shimabukuro, holds dual nationality as a Japanese-American. Born in the U.S. he returned to Okinawa before World War II. When hostilities between the United States and Japan broke out in 1941, Shimabukuro returned to America and enlisted, and when the war ended spent a good deal of his life as an Army instructor. The present session of conversation classes will run to October 28, after which a new round will start. The new class will be run by instructors from native English speakers from Camp Schwab and Ayumi Arakaki.
