Swindlers Overpowered by Naha City Police

Date Posted: 1999-12-17

Two men were arrested by Naha City Police last Wednesday, December 8th on suspicions of swindling money. Hiroshi Yamauchi, 62, arrested at 4:25 PM, and Yoshiharu Sakugawa, 42, arrested at 2:00 PM earlier on the same day in an Okinawa City street, allegedly plotted together to take money from someone who had hit Yamauchi’s car.

A traffic accident had earlier occurred on October 1st this year, in Chatan. After the car accident, the Yamauchi and his crony created a forged paper stating that he (Yamauchi) lost his job due to this accident, even though he did not have any job. He deceived the insurance company and got money to the amount of ¥156,000 as compensation for his hypothetically lost job.

The deception was revealed while Naha City Police was investigating another incident in which Yamauchi and 3 other accomplices attempted to take money by force from the person who had hit his car. They used threats to extort money from that driver. The suspects were arrested on October 26th, and prosecuted on November 16th.
