Land deal leads Ishigaki politician in hot water

Date Posted: 2003-06-22

A member of the Ishigaki Agricultural Land Committee has landed in hot water over a deal he allegedly made with a local real estate company. Investigators say the owner of the real estate company had requested that a man create paperwork showing that a patch of land the company owned was registered as residential land instead of agricultural land, because residential land sells for a much higher price. In return, the real estate company paid the committee member 600,000 in cash.

Although the real estate company owner has admitted that they had a deal, the accused committee member denies any wrongdoing. "The 600,000 is a loan I got from that real estate company. It is not a payment for paperwork. As a matter, of fact I am planning to pay off this loan shortly," the committee member says.
