So much to do, so little time this Labor Day weekend

Okinawa is definitely the place to be for the upcoming Labor Day weekend. With so many things to do, from pleasant outdoor parties to major concerts and events, it might even prove to be a major decision just to work out where to point the car first. But I do have some excellent suggestions.

Why not head on out to Torii Station and enjoy the Labor Day weekend at the beach on Saturday, September 4. A fun day with the whole family at this holiday celebration is assured, courtesy of Torii Station MWR.

For starters, Torii will be barbecuing and giving away free hot dogs between noon and 1 p.m., or at least until supplies last. You can grab a nice cold soft drink to go with your hot dog, and it's also on the house! Guests can swim in the ocean or get more than their feet wet at Torii's famous water slide, open for the day to all willing participants. For those into showing off their summertime athletic talents, the action will take place in the form of a beach volleyball tournament. Throw in kayak races, a car show, a little free music, and you have the ideal ingredients for a fantastic beach party, or "Labor Day Beach Blast," as the official name implies.

Torii MWR Marketing Chief Henry Ortega said the event is just another way to help everyone enjoy their stay here on Okinawa. "We invite the entire community to come out," said Ortega. "We would also like to thank our co-sponsors Omega World Travel and AT&T, Kraft Foods, Coca Cola, Matel, and Oscar Mayer.”

Visitors to Torii Station's "Labor Day Beach Blast" can expect free quality entertainment, starting with country sounds provided by DJs Diamonds and Denim at noon. Rock-n-rollers can check out the stage area in front of the water slide, where Cry Wolf is scheduled to play at 1 p.m. and again at 3:30 p.m. Chuck Wow, an alternative rock band that has been making a big name for itself here on the island, will hit the stage at 1:45 p.m. for show number one and at 4:30 p.m. for show number two.

Following in the tradition of songs about surf and fast cars by the Beach Boys, the Okinawa Motor Festival will be bringing in some of their own hot rods for car fans to marvel at. And, all SOFA/DOD ID card holders over the age of eighteen with a valid driver's license can take their shot at winning a 1990 Nissan Skyline from Bobby's Used Cars at Torii's own raffle for just $1! Tickets are on sale until Saturday afternoon with the lucky winner to be announced at 5 p.m. (Please check with either the Coral Cove, Scuba Locker, or Torii's Fitness Center for tickets and details on rules and other information.)

Also, don’t miss out on the Torii Station Scuba Locker's summer sale campaign, which will discount U.S. Diver products this weekend.

Organizers request that no hard alcohol, glass, or pets be brought to the event. For more information about the beach volleyball tournament and the kayak races, please call 644-4334.

Moving from Torii Station to Kinser, Labor Day revelers can catch all the hot stuff at "Summerfest 99" on Sunday, September 5. There will be plenty of food, drinks, and games for everyone. There’s little doubt the main attraction will be a performance by brothers Gedric and Joel Hailey - better known as "K-Ci and Jo-Jo." The R&B duo have been heating up the charts with hits such as "All My Life." (Check with Marine MCCS for ticket details.)

Over at Kadena, the boys of summer will be taking to the Four Diamonds field for the "Kadena Klassic Pac-Rim" softball tournament throughout the whole weekend. Fans can check out a total of 12 women's teams and 24 men's teams competing for top honors.

Kadena also has a few other activities planned, taking into consideration the different ages and interests of everyone. Theater lovers can see the award-winning play "Letters From the Front," scheduled to take place at the Schilling Community Center on Sunday, September 5. Bowlers can head on over to the All Star Lanes for a special "bowl two games and get the third one free" from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, September 6.

Getting back to the surf and sand, the USO is putting on a "Reggae on the Beach" party that will include a free barbecue - until supplies last - great music, and plenty of other fun at Camp Schwab's Oura Wan Beach from noon until 6 p.m.

Don't be a couch potato this Labor Day weekend! Get out and participate in some of the great entertainment and events happening around the island.
