Date Posted: 1999-08-20

A gang member who avoided arrest by lying about his identity during a routine traffic stop has been apprehended after an investigation revealed he was a member of a criminal gang, police announced this week.

The suspect, Minoru Nakahodo, 26, a member of Teruya Ikka, a Yakuza gang, was questioned by police after being pulled over while driving in Naha City August 4 at about 2:15 a.m. When asked for his driverís license, Nakahodo said he had forgotten it and gave a false name and birth date to the police officer to avoid arrest. Issued with a traffic violation, Nakahodo then supplied a false name and used another personís hanko (Japanese seal) when asked to sign the ticket.

An investigation by Naha City Police found the information Nakahodo was false and arrested him.
