“Cheap” extortion attempt lands man in custody

Date Posted: 1999-08-20

A man who attempted to blackmail the management of a supermarket in southern Okinawa was arrested Friday, authorities have revealed.

Police said the man, Genzou Iha, 45, accused a store clerk at the supermarket of being rude August 3 after paying for some goods he bought at the store. Iha, police said, then wrote a letter to the store’s management stating he would take the matter public unless he was paid ¥150,000 into a designated bank account. The management then notified Yonabaru Police of the extortion attempt, who were then issued with a warrant for Iha’s arrest.

The suspect was found by police in Naha City Friday. Under questioning, Iha admitted his guilt.
