On Tuesday, November 30th, at about 11:20 p.m., a 25-year old man was placed under arrest by the Yaeyama Police. The incident that led to his detention had earlier occurred in Ishigaki City on the same day. While he was driving a mini-van, he tried to make a right turn across a crosswalk, and then hit a 47-year old man crossing the street. Although this driver noticed that he had run over someone crossing the street, he never stopped to help the victim or notify this case to the nearest police station. He just fled from the site, leaving even the car which he was driving behind. The victim of the traffic accident suffered injuries on his head which will take about 2 weeks to completely heal.
Yaeyama Police identified the mad driver through a short investigation based on the car he abandoned on the scene of the crime. However, on that same evening, at about 10:20 p.m., the suspect took himself to the police station in the company of his colleague and confessed his crime. He was instantly arrested on the charge of accidental infliction of injury and traffic violation.
