What’s Going On Here? A Caustic Response from a Concerned Reader

I am writing in response to your article in the last edition (November 24-December 1) of the Japan Update. The article was in your column titled "What's Going On Here?" and it was on page 16. What I am writing in response to is your comment about finding a decent teenaged babysitter anywhere on the island.

My concern is that there are many decent babysitters on the island. You just have to look for them. I have often been told that I am a very good, if not an exceptional babysitter. I have always tried my best to please the kids and their parents. Most of the time that I have off from school and schoolwork is spent babysitting. Yes, there have been a few times that I have had to say no to a job because I already had plans with friends. I try my best to be there when someone needs me, and I have even had to cancel my plans a couple of times to accommodate others.

The other thing I would like to say is that when you make statements like "anywhere on the island", you need to have done your research and looked out for all available options. When you make statements like that, it downgrades every teenager on the island, including those whom you have never met or even attempted to recruit for any babysitting job.

Just because you have possibly had a bad experience with babysitters does not mean that every babysitter on the island is bad.
