Consultation for Foreigners at Koza Health Center

Date Posted: 1999-12-03

There are about 7500 foreign residents in Okinawa from over 100 countries originating from all six continents. U.S. Military personnel and their families are not included in this count. The following health information concerns all foreigners who are legal resident on the island.

Koza Health Center in Okinawa City offers health consultation services to all foreign residents on the island every third Wednesday of the month. The consultations are conducted with linguistic assistance for English and Spanish-speaking residents.

The Koza Health Center began this medical service in 1994 in the form of AIDS consultations for Okinawa’s foreign community. However, the service has extended to cover several other categories of general medicine. So far, Koza Center is the only place in Okinawa that offers official bilingual medical aid, both in the physiological and mental domains, to foreign residents.

Hours of operation are 1:00pm to 3:00pm, and appointments can be made by phone during those open hours. Those who wish to contact the consulting physicians by phone should call (098) 938-9792. All consultation services are free of charge, but patients have to pay for their tests. The next consultation date will be December 15th, 1999.

AIDS telephone consultations in Japanese by volunteer health consultants are also available from 8:00pm to 10:00pm, Monday through Friday. Those interested in the service should call HIV Network Okinawa at Chuo Health Center @ (098) 834-0211.
