Missing persons month begins

Date Posted: 1999-08-07

Police have launched an all-out offensive in their attempt to locate missing persons during August as part of a Missing Persons Month campaign.

From August 1, police will beef-up patrols and increase investigations in the hope of locating not only missing persons, but to hopefully identify an increasing number of bodies which remain unidentified.

For those searching for missing loved ones, a guidance clinic provides counseling and grief management. The police also want people to realize privacy shall be respected when searching for missing persons.

Research and investigations conducted during last year’s missing persons month showed that 67 runaways were found, and that 13 bodies were positively identified.

In 1998 police statistics revealed there were 1,334 people who went missing and whose family requested assistance from the police to discover there whereabouts. From 1984 to June this year, police said, of 77 unidentified bodies, 64 were male, 13 female.

For more information or for requests to search for missing loved ones, please contact 098-867-6007 (Identification Section of the Prefectural Police), 098-867-8172 (Safety Living Section) or your nearest police box.
