Elderly man throttles cabbie

Date Posted: 1999-08-07

An elderly man suspected of strangling a taxi driver after riding in his taxi has been arrested, police investigators said.

At about 4 p.m. July 26, the 61-year-old man allegedly rode from Yoshihara Iriguchi to Awase, and upon reaching his desired destination, suddenly wrapped what was thought to be a single piece of string around the driverís neck in an attempt to strangle him.

After breaking free, the driver notified police of the assault, and an officer from Awase Koban arrived on-scene to find the 48-year-old driver distressed.

Investigations located the elderly man and after questioning both the suspect and victim, it was found the suspect had wound four pieces of string together to commit the assault.
