Police collar vending machine thief

Date Posted: 1999-08-07

Police arrested a Korean national early Friday morning after he was caught attempting to illegally obtain 500 yen coins from a vending machine in Naha City.

The man, 30, and currently a university student residing in Ginowan City, was taken into custody by police after being questioned by a patrolman who suspected the man was tampering with a machine in Nishi, Naha City.

The patrolman became suspicious when he sighted the Korean repeatedly inserting coins into a vending machine, then trying to extract 500 coins by pulling on the change lever. According to police, the man would insert Korean won coins into the machines, then instead of selecting an item to purchase would attempt to redeem 500 coins.

When questioned by the officer about recent similar thefts at vending machines in Furujima, Aja and Wakasa in Naha City, he noticed the man had hidden 60 Korean won coins and 50 500 coins in his helmet.

Upon further questioning by police, the suspect admitted he was responsible for thefts from vending machines around Naha City from July 27 -30.
