Small Shop with Big Hearted Woman

Date Posted: 1999-12-03

Aya Coffee Shop, probably the smallest coffee shop of its kind in Okinawa, is owned and managed by a woman, Fumi Arashiro, a native of Aguni Village - one of the Okinawann Islands located about 60km northeast of Naha City.

Fumi Arashiro says the main reason for opening the coffee shop was because she loves coffee. Before that, She had been selling coffee at the morning market in Gajyumaru Hiroba, Nago City. While she was selling coffee at the morning market, she made up her mind to open her own coffee shop. Then she rented the tiny space around Nago Crossing to open her coffee shop.

This December, her coffee shop will celebrate its 4th anniversary. Though the small business is located in a really small space, the owner’s warm-hearted treatment of all the customers makes them feelvery comfortable there. Her customers are a wide range of people, from tourists to the mayor of Nago City himself, public officials and office workers.

Because of the warmth of the shop its owner, many people visit the place which they consider peaceful and restful. There are no frictions nor quarrels there. “Once people step into this coffee house, there is no difference between a titled person and another,” one of the customers said about the coffee hideout.

Recently, the owner, Fumi Arashiro, decorated the shop’s interior with flags of the G-8 and EU, in anticipated celebration of the Nago City G-8 Summit coming up next July.
