Local Leaders Meet in Regional Safety Conference

A Regional Safety Conference met at the Yugafu Inn Okinawa in Nago City on Monday, November 29th, from 15:00 to 17:00. During the discussions, the Chief of Okinawa Prefectural Police Headquarters, Yasuhiko Nishimura, the Security Division Chief, the Public Affairs Division boss, and a deputy from Nago City Police all made pertinent remarks as representatives of the prefectural and regional police. The mayor of Nago City and deputy mayors of Kunigami, Ogimi and Higashi Villages took part in the conference to make the voices of their respective municipalities heard.

On the same occasion, the heads of groups and organizations in Nago City participated in the conference to share thier views on how best to prepare for the Summit. Altogether, some 11 people from the above mentioned departments atended the conference.

It was organized with the purpose of promoting mutual understanding with local inhabitants on the security constraints which will be put into effect during the G-8 Summit, and to gain the support and cooperation of the local leaders for the police actions.

The chief of Okinawa Prefecture Police, Yasuhiro Nishimura, suggested the possibility of international terrorism during the period the G-8 Summit that will be held nest summer in Nago. He also argued that it is important to check traffic and speed limits, and to deploy an overall effective security system, though these measure must not be made to cause too much effect on the citizensí normal daily lives.
