Reggie Life’s Film on Converse Culture Shock Goes Public

Date Posted: 1999-11-19

The US Consulate General and the International Exchange Center of Okinawa’s International University will be hosting the screening of Reggie Life’s documentary film, "After America ...After Japan” on Monday, November 22nd.

This documentary portrays a converse culture shock experience of Japanese nationals returning to Japan after having lived in America for a long time and, on the other hand, the experience of Americans back in the United States after having spent several years in Japan. The film is based on an interview with 200 people, including Okinawans.

Reggie Life visited Japan in 1990 for an Artist Exchange program. He worked with Yoji Yamada as a staff for the "Tora san" film series. In 1992, Life produced a documentary film on the lives of African-Americans in Japan. Then in 1996, Life produced a TV documentary called "Doubles", which focused on the lives of children born to U.S. servicemen and Japanese women. The documentary showed the beauty of sharing two cultural backgrounds and also sent out the message that those children are "Doubles", not "Halves".

Time: Nov. 22nd (Monday)
The film begins from 18:30 to 20:30, the interaction begins from 20:30 to 21:00.
Place: AV Hall inside library of Okinawa International University in Ginowan City (4F)
