U.S. serviceman convicted of smuggling marijuana

A 24-year-old Marine sergeant stationed on Camp Foster has been sentenced to two and half years to prison for violating the Japanese Cannabis Control Law. The Naha District Court sentence was suspended for four years.

According to the court, the sergeant had smuggled 480 grams of marijuana from the U.S. via mail. The presiding judge, in sentencing the Marine, stated that "the defendant was actively involved in the crime that was heinous in nature because the amount of marijuana was significant."
