Diving and Fishing at Summit Meeting Site Banned

Date Posted: 1999-11-19

On Friday, November 12th the Chief of the Marine Safety Agency held a press conference during which he declared that diving and fishing activities near the G-8 Summit site will be banned during the immediately preceding the Summit. The official also said that there will be a tight security system during the Summit, with the dispatching of about 100 patrol boats and 20 airplanes, something never before seen on the island. The Marine Safety Chief begged for the local population’s understanding, saying that the measure were absolutely necessary to maintain for a successful Summit.

Many local tour operators and diving companies have expressed anxiety over the fact that the Summit will be held at a period when many tourists normally flock into Okinawa for diverse water oriented activities. The security restraints to swimming and diving mean that one of the most attractive aspects of Okinawa for tourists will be greatly hampered by the arrival of the world’s greatest leaders.
