The Great American Smokeout

Date Posted: 1999-11-13

The Kadena Health and Wellness Center (HAWC) and the Fitness Center will on Thursday, November 18th, organize a “Fun run/Walk” to mark the annual Great American Smokeout day. The Smokeout track event will start at 8:00 a.m. at the Risner Fitness Center. Every year, several thousands of Americans quit smoking, though not always permanently. However, the Great American Smokeout is one occasion every November during which smokers can give themselves a healthy break at least for a day. Some 390,000 people die each year from smoke-related illnesses such as lung, larynx or cervical cancer, emphysema, pneumonia, stroke and other cardiovascular ailments. About 5.000 non-smokers also die from the effects of second-hand smoke imposed on them by uncaring smokers.

Besides the Great Smokeout, the Kadena HAWC offers regular tobacco cessation classes every month for people who want to quit. Call 634-2499 for more information.
