Fire Accident Kills Elderly Man

Date Posted: 1999-11-10

On October 31st, about 23:30, a fire broke out in Tobaru, Yonashiro Town. A 74-year-old man, who had been suffering from hemiplegia, died in the blaze. The fire - it was later discovered - was caused by a cigarette lit by Yasuhiro Uechi, 50, the son of the older man. Uechi was allegedly smoking a cigarette while he was lying on his bed drunk. The cigarette then ignited the blanket. At the time he woke up to the smell of the smoke, the towel blanket was on fire. He unsuccessfully tried to put the fire off, and finally got out of the house after realizing that he could not douse the flames by himself. His father was not able to get out from the burning house because of a disability.

After firemen got to the site and extinguished the fire, the rescue crew took the old man the hospital where he died shortly afterwards. Gushikawa City Police arrested the younger man the next day on charges of causing an accidental fire resulting in injury and death.
