New Year’s Greeting Post Cards on Sale

Traditional New Year greeting cards have been on sale since November 1 throughout Japan. The cards are a bug business, Local postal officials expect to sell some 18,376,000 cards in Okinawa alone this year even though the estimate is some 2 million cards less than a year ago. The New Year’s greeting cards are on sale al the way through January 11th.

There are five different designs available on sale in Okinawa. One is an ordinary style postcard priced at ¥50 each. The postcards have lottery numbers printed on them with prizes including electronic bicycles, digital cameras, massage chairs, MD players and other valuables. The lottery date is on January 15th. The other four kinds of postcards have illustrations of “Dragon and Ocean”, “Fuji Mt. In Unkai”, “Astro Boy Atom’s New Year” and “Colorful Bouncing Ball” (called Mari in Japanese). The postcard with picture of Mari, is an Okinawan special card. The illustrated cards cost ¥55 each.

Post offices are also planning a millennium service for customers who post their cards before December 21st with a special stamp that has the date of year 2000, January 1. Postal officials say that since this service will be available only once in a thousand years, this year is the opportunity of a lifetime to get that special stamp.
