Culture and Tradition at Yomitan Matsuri

Date Posted: 1999-10-30

Yomitan's annual "matsuri" will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7 and 8, at the Yomitan Village Athletic Park. This local event has come to be one of the most popular festivals on the island, featuring many traditional aspects of Okinawan culture.

Throughout both days, visitors can enjoy fantastic performances of local song and dance, and admire some of the beautiful traditional dresses of the island. Many of the songs are original to Yomitan. The citizens of Yomitan will perform all of the musical entertainment themselves.

An Okinawan "matsuri" also usually means plenty of food: yaki-soba, rib steak, and yakitori will be ready to eat, along with many other "matsuri" favorites.

The main attraction to Yomitan's festival is the re-enactment of a Ryukyu envoy leaving for China, which includes a replica of a Ryukyu trading vessel.

If you are new to the island, or if you have simply not yet had the time to experience the fun atmosphere of a local festival, the Yomitan Matsuri will provide the whole family with plenty of local memories.
