Naha Bankoku Festival to Bond Community

Date Posted: 1999-10-30

Naha City is fast gathering momentum for next year's G-8 Summit, with the "Naha Bankoku Festival" scheduled on November 7, which everyone on Okinawa is invited to attend. This first event of its kind will feature a variety of entertaining activities and performances geared at helping citizens to learn more about the G8 Summit. The festival will also be a good occasion to foster international friendships.

The idea for this festival came up when Naha City officials and foreign residents of Okinawa realized the need to provide more information to the average citizen about the participating countries of the G-8 Summit. Organizers are kicking things off with a fashion show that will feature different styles of dress from each of the eight countries being represented. Displays holding summit related information, along with a poster drawing exhibit by local high school students, can be viewed. There will be many pamphlets and other printed material in both Japanese and English.

A short speech contest will take place to get people acquainted with the different languages that will be used at next year's summit. Members of the audience will be asked to recite greetings on stage and will be judged for their speech proficiency.

Visitors will also be able to see a variety of traditional folk dances and music from around the world. Samples of international foods will be available for free tasting purchase.

The Naha Bankoku Festival will take place at Palette Kumoji on Kokusai Street from 12 noon until 9 p.m. The city of Naha wishes everyone to join in on the fun!
