Date Posted: 2003-06-14

Boxing lovers should mark June 29 in their calendars as Mugen, former WBA super light class World Champion Nobuaki Hiranaka's company that runs his boxing gym in Tomishiro holds a pro boxing tournament in Budokan arena in Onoyama, Naha City. The tournament profits are earmarked to benefit children who are traffic accident victims.

Hiranaka says that the tournament will highlight the power and traditions of Okinawan boxers who have held several world titles in the past. The latest Okinawan boxer to come close was Shigeru Nakazato who failed to win the WBC World Champion title in a match against Oscar Rios of Mexico in a February match in Tokyo. The highlight of the event will be Nakazato's 10-round match against Petchngam Sor. Vorapin of Thailand, the reigning Asian Super Bantamweight Champion.

The event will also feature the retirement ceremony of Okinawan pro boxer Akinobu Hiranaka, the younger brother of the event organizer Nobuaki.

Tickets to the tournament range from 3,000 for grandstand seats, to 10,000 for the best ringside seats. Middle and high school children pay 2,700, and admission is free for elementary school students and younger children. Ticket are available at Hiranaka Boxing Gym, tel. 098-856-8889. Budokan arena doors open at 1 p.m. and the first match begins at 2 p.m.. Okinawa Budokan is located in Naha across from Naha Military Port.
