Saving Dugong Fund Established in Nago

Date Posted: 1999-10-23

Last October 15th, the Saving Dugong Fund was established by the cooperation of 30 local residents of Nago City. It is believed that dugongs exist around the Henoko area in Nago. 20 people from other regions, and some professionals in the area of marine biology, joined the project in order to protect dugongs and their environment from the hazards of development.

The Fund collects contributions of 1,000 yen from anyone who wants to give them support. The members are aiming for the amount of 10,000,000 yen from all who want to save Okinawa’s dugongs. They are going to ask IUCN (The World Conservation Union) and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) to inspect the ecological system of the dugongs in Okinawa when they achieve their target financial goal. All of the contributions will be spent on the inspection of the dugongs’ ecosystem because the ecosystem of dugongs is still a mystery, and they believe they should know more about it.

One of the members of Saving Dugongs Fund said that they would like to make a world in which humans and dugongs and all other living creatures can live together through this Fund. They are planning a charity concert and festivals for the preservation of dugongs. For more information about the Saving Dugongs Fund, contact the number 098-055-8587 (tel/ fax).
