Gushikawa Matsuri arrives this weekendDate Posted: 1999-10-19 The festivities on Saturday will showcase karate demonstrations, a taiko drum performance, the crowning of "Miss Gushikawa," and a Jazz concert. There will also be a special bonsai tree exhibit, and many Gushikawa products will be on sale. One of the highlights of the first day will be a series of Okinawan bull fights, which have a long history here on the island. The bull fights are for free and will take place between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the Agena "Togyu jo" (Bull fight Arena). Sunday will hold a variety of Okinawan dances, a costume parade, and Gushikawa's famous "dragon" dance. You can catch more local music at Stage 1 or head on over to Stage 3 for a live rock concert! Minoru Yokoda of the Gushikawa City Festival Planning Office said that the city invites all foreign residents to attend. "We don't have any famous entertainers, but everything is done by the local citizens and the atmosphere is friendly. We want everyone to enjoy themselves." Don't forget that there will be plenty of food and drink, and there will be a fireworks show on both days. To get to the Gushikawa City Hall, head out Gate 2 and turn left on to Highway 330. Continue going straight passed the Agena Intersection. The city hall will be on your right. |
