Smoking Fitness Tip

Lynnell, I am a smoker. For health reasons, I have to stop smoking. Why is it that smokers gain so much weight after they quit smoking? Will I gain weight?

Carolyn, this is my take on this. The reason most smokers gain so much weight is because of the nicotine in the cigarettes. It helps to speed up your metabolism (because your heart is working harder). Once you stop smoking, your heart doesn't have to work as hard, so your metabolism slows down. Thus, it does not burn as many calories as before. The best thing for you to do is to plan for the change by starting an exercise routine that is both easy and fun for you to do. All it takes is a lifestyle change that would provide endless benefits. Since you are already seeing a doctor, you need to get as much information from him/her as you possibly can.
