Woman held on suspicion of kidnapping three

Date Posted: 2003-06-07

A 44-year-old woman called Okinawa City Police Station Monday, asking for help in finding her 20-year-old daughter and two grandchildren. She said that she had received a phone call from another woman she was acquainted with, and who had threatened to kill the daughter and her two children.

Following the threatening call she went to look for her daughter and the two kids, and as she was not able to find them she called the police.

About five hours later, a police patrol on the lookout for the missing persons spotted a car in the vicinity of the woman's house. As the car stopped, the two missing children got out and the car immediately took off. The police gave a chase and stopped the car. The driver was Misuzu Nakamoto, 44, the same woman who had made the threatening phone call. As she refused to say anything, the police arrested her on suspicion of kidnapping.

The police also confirmed that the young woman and her two children were not harmed. They had been taken to northern Okinawa in Nakamoto's car, and she returned them afterwards to their house. She reportedly told investigators that she had wanted to make the other woman to worry. "She owes quite a bit money to me but never even attempts to pay back. I wanted to get her to think," she said.
