DODDS-Okinawa “Teacher of the Year” is Known

Date Posted: 1999-10-19

Ms. Karen Dees of the Amelia Earhart Intermediate School, on Kadena Air Force Base, has been voted the new DOODS-Okinawa Teacher of the Year for 1999. She was chosen by a panel of Okinawa educators, administrators, parents and military community members.

The Teacher of the Year normally recognizes and honors American classroom teachers who have demonstrated excellence in their teaching and conduct. According to Dr. Steven R. Bloom, District Superintendent, “teaching is one of the most critical professions in the United States and deserves this prestigious honors program.”

This year’s laureate Karen Dees, is an elementary Science Laboratory teacher. Previously, she taught in the Department of Defense Dependents Schools and stateside school systems. She will now represent the District in the Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) and National Teacher of the Year 2000 programs.

Ms. Dees believes that “learning is a life-long endeavor” that must be “fun”. According to her assessment, only those who actually enjoy the things they are learning can retain any knowledge from it. She is holder of a BA in Elementary Education from Louisiana Tech University and a Masters of Science (MS) in Community Services from Michigan State University.
