PM Obuchi holds informal meeting to discuss G8 Summit

The Japanese Prime Minister, Keizo Obuchi, held the first informal gathering to discuss next year’s Summit at the Prime Minister’s official residence Monday. The Prime Minister and other participants discussed primarily the theme to be used for the meeting between the heads of the world’s major industrialized countries.

Generally, the theme of the Summit Meeting is based on the actual situation of the world’s economy and society in general. At present, the theme is being considering mainly by the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Obuchi said he would like the theme to be an expression of local appeal as this summit marks the first time it will be held outside Tokyo. Also discussed were regional disputes, and Japan’s aging society.
