Store clerk’s heroics sees shoplifter under arrest

Date Posted: 1999-10-08

A store clerk who stopped a shoplifter is being hailed a hero this week after he brought down the thief during a wild attempt to escape with an armful of CDs. According to police the suspect, Hideaki Hisayama, 26, stole 37 CDs valued at ¥113,634 from Tsutaya Yonbaru, in Yonabaru-cho, on Sunday shortly before 3 p.m., but was noticed leaving the store without paying by Tsukasa Tanaka, 26, an employee at the store and one of his colleagues.

After a short chase, the suspect attempted to flee on a motorscooter, but with little regard for his own safety, Tanaka leapt onto the scooter and wrestled with Hisayama. The suspect kept circling the carpark where his bike had been parked in an attempt to shake off Tanaka, but the young man held on, despite receiving several telling blows to the body. When Yonabaru City Police arrived shortly after 3 p.m., Hisayama was quickly detained and placed under arrest.
