Ogimi Village assemblyman nabbed for drunk driving

Date Posted: 2003-06-07

Police nabbed a member of the Ogimi Village assembly driving while intoxicated after he drove into a police checkpoint, made a U-turn and tried to escape. The police managed to stop the man after a brief chase.

That's when they discovered that the suspect was Takeshi Miyagi, a current member of Ogimi Village Assembly.

According to police, Miyagi denied that he had tried to run away. He reportedly claimed that he didn't even notice the police. However, he admitted that he had been drinking, first with a friend in his house and then at a second party in Naha.

Ogimi Village Assembly Chairman Sadao Maeda said after the incident that the fellow assembly member's conduct had brought shame to the whole assembly. "I would like to apologize to every person who voted him. We will have an emergency meeting and the assembly will then decide what steps we will take concerning his conduct," Maeda stated.
