Police sergeant fired for sexual misconduct

Date Posted: 1999-07-30

A 44-year old police sergeant working at the Okinawa Prefectural Police Anti-gang Section was dismissed for sexual misconduct, Friday. The misconduct took place on July 12. The director and deputy director of the section where the officer worked also were reprimanded for the lack of supervision.

The fired police sergeant worked as a sports supervisor for high school students during his off-duty hours. He is accused of touching one of the female students improperly on two occasions in May and July. A friend of the student who asked for help notified the police of the officer’s misconduct. The police conducted an investigation and the officer admitted to the offense.

According to the spokesman for the Prefectural Police, the sergeant was given a disciplinary dismissal, the most severe punishment for such an action, because he committed a serious offense as a police officer breaking the public trust. The Prefectural Police also issued an apology and promised to take steps to prevent this kind of incident from happening again.
