U.S. hopes for Futenma relocation plan within 6 months: Defense Secretary

Date Posted: 1999-07-30

The relocation plans of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma need to be finalized within six months and in time for the start of the G8 Summit in Nago, scheduled for July 2000, U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen said Monday.

Cohen, speaking to a group of reporters while in transit to Japan, said it was President Bill Clinton’s wish to see the transfer of the Futenma facility to another location “resolved by next July,” The Yomiuri Shimbun said.

“We're hoping we can make significant progress by having it scheduled, perhaps agreed to, in the next six months or so. We need to set the time frame in which it could all be resolved,” the Yomiuri quoted Cohen as saying Monday.

Cohen added that although the U.S. hopes for a speedy solution, it was “up to the Okinawan government to recommend a site.”
