Sunny afternoon at Ayahashi Nursing Home

By: Marie W. Conway

Date Posted: 1999-07-30

Over 70 residents at Ayahashi Nursing Home welcomed American vocalist Wendy Anderson for an afternoon of entertainment, Tuesday. Robyn Tengan, Community Relations Specialist at Commander Fleet Activities, Okinawa (CFAO), helped coordinate this event.

Anderson recently saw a segment on a popular news program, which stated "music is healing to people," and this inspired her to share her talent in an attempt to raise others’ spirits. It is easy to understand the message contained in the news program; when your favorite song comes on the radio, just think of how quickly your spirits rise. Anxious to help others, Anderson contacted Tengan who often brings American military and civilian guests to visit Ayahashi Nursing Home, as well as other retirement homes on the island. Afterwards, Anderson said, "I feel like I gave little and received a lot from this experience. I hope I can encourage others to volunteer to visit nursing homes and other facilities. It was a heart-warming experience.”
