Number of tourists to Okinawa on the rise

Date Posted: 1999-10-01

A report by the Kanko Resort Division of the Okinawa Prefectural Government shows that 522,600 tourists visited Okinawa in August, a 6.4 percent (31,400) rise over figures for the same period last year and the highest ever recorded for the month. The number of tourists from January through to August came to 3,098,000, up 269,000 from last year.

The Kanko Resort Division said the findings are a direct result of reduced airfares and an increasing worldwide interest in the prefecture after the announcement that Nago City will host the Group of Eight Economic Summit next year. Officials said they are hoping to exceed previous forecasts of 4.4 million tourists to Okinawa for the year.

Tourists from Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka increased by 28,400 voter figures from last year while international tourists numbered 24,900 people, up by a little over 1,000 from the corresponding period in 1998.

Mode of transportation saw an interesting trend develop, with more than 14,000 (up 28.6 %) tourists choosing passenger liners and ferries while air travel only attracted 10,500, a decrease of 16.7%.
