Number of tourists to Okinawa on the riseDate Posted: 1999-10-01 The Kanko Resort Division said the findings are a direct result of reduced airfares and an increasing worldwide interest in the prefecture after the announcement that Nago City will host the Group of Eight Economic Summit next year. Officials said they are hoping to exceed previous forecasts of 4.4 million tourists to Okinawa for the year. Tourists from Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka increased by 28,400 voter figures from last year while international tourists numbered 24,900 people, up by a little over 1,000 from the corresponding period in 1998. Mode of transportation saw an interesting trend develop, with more than 14,000 (up 28.6 %) tourists choosing passenger liners and ferries while air travel only attracted 10,500, a decrease of 16.7%. |
