Typhoon wreaks havoc on Okinawa

Date Posted: 1999-10-01

Super typhoon “Bart” left a trail of destruction in Okinawa after it rampaged through the prefecture last Wednesday and Thursday. As a result of its ferocity, “Bart” resulted in power failures to 113,000 houses in Okinawa and cut water supplies to 118,000 more. Due to the torrential downpours associated with the Super Typhoon, 471 houses were flooded and land slips occurred in more than 26 locations. Police and rescue workers said 41 people were injured.

A new school building completed in Haebaru Village and which celebrated an opening ceremony on September 21, has been closed temporarily after rain caused a massive landslide to rip through the doors and windows. The building was to be used as a school building, the Okinawa Chuo Ikusei-en. The school, scheduled to open on October 1, will be closed until clean-up operations are complete.
