Traffic accidents down on last year

The number of traffic accidents for September is down on last year’s figures, prefectural police announced Monday. Police said there were 47 accidents in September, down by five for the corresponding period last year., however, there were 48 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in the prefecture, but 10 less than 1998.

Accidents involving youths between the ages of 16 and 24 numbered 22 cases, with drink driving responsible for 21 accidents. Of the month’s fatalities, 12 elderly people, 14 pedestrians and 12 motorcyclists were killed. From September 17 to 19, 110 motorists were booked for drink driving offenses.
