IBM to open Call Center in Naha

Date Posted: 1999-10-01

During a meeting with Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine Tuesday, vice chairman of Nihon IBM, Toshiro Honbayashi announced plans for IBM to open a call center in Naha City in April 2000.

IBM’s initial plans call for a staff of 50, but estimate that by 2001 it will need a workforce of 300 to cater for the company’s expansion as an internet and database technical center.

Media reports said IBM has attracted both the Bank of the Ryukyus and Ryu Ai System as major investors in the project, with Ryu Ai being the largest investor with 85 percent. Honbayashi said his company was aware of the unemployment crisis in the prefecture, and would be pleased if his company could help reduce those figures.
