Upcoming festivals on Okinawa

Summer is the season of “Matsuri,” or festivals, in Japan. In Okinawa, a number of festivals are scheduled for July and August. Here's a list of some of the best to take place throughout the island in July. Take the time out to have some fun at some of the island’s best matsuri!

Higashi Matsuri

Date: 25 July. Location: Higashi Village Field. Time: 6:20 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Fireworks: 8 p.m. - 8:10 p.m., 9:45 p.m.-10 p.m.

Festival highlights: Drum Performance (6:20 p.m. - 6:40 p.m.), Eisa Dance (7 p.m. - 7:20 p.m.), Folk Music Concert (7:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.), Bon dance (9:15 p.m. - 9:45 p.m.)

Nago Natsu Matsuri

Date: July 30 and 31, August 1. Location: Nago Fishing Port. Time: 3 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Fireworks: 8:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. (31st).

Festival highlights: On July 30, live rock performance (5 p.m. - 6 p.m. ), Music Concert (7 p.m. - 9 p.m.) On July 31, Soccer Tournament (2 p.m. - 4 p.m.), Basketball Tournament (2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.), Street Dance (6 p.m. - 7 p.m.), Steel Drum Performance (7 p.m. - 8 p.m.).

On August 1, Dragon Boat Race (9 a.m. - 6 p.m.), Music Concert (4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.), Hawaiian Show (6 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.), Karate demonstration (5 p.m. - 5:40 p.m.)

Kanna Dam Matsuri

Date: July 25. Location: Dam, Kanna in Ginoza Village. Time: 11 a.m. - 8:20 p.m.

Fireworks: 8:05 p.m. - 8:20 p.m.

Festival highlights: Ginoza Village Traditional Dance Performance (6 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.), Magic Show (6:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.): Music Concert (3:40 p.m. - 4:40 p.m. & 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.). The Village Tour, a Boat Tour (that includes a cruise around the dam), Kanna, and handicraft classes from 11:30 am - 5 p.m. The dam and Kanna will be illuminated after sunset. Farm products will be sold at the festival.

Onna Matsuri

Date: July 24 and 25. Location: Onna Fishing Port in Onna Village. Time: 2 p.m. - 9:15 p.m. (July 24), 10 a.m. - 9:15 p.m. (July 25).

Fireworks: 9 p.m. - 9:15 p.m. (July 24 and 25).

Festival highlights: Glass Boat Tour - cruises off Manza (2 p.m. - 6 p.m. on July 24 from 10 am - 6 p.m. on the 25th (¥200 for adults and ¥100 for children), Fishing Contest (4 p.m. - 5 p.m. on July 24 and 25), the Lottery (6:05 p.m. - 6:20 p.m. on the 24th & 7:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. on the 25th), Music Concerts (6:20 p.m. - 9 p.m. on the 24th & 8 p.m. - 9 p.m. on 25th)

Gushikawa Matsuri

Date: July 24 and 25. Location: Fureai Park in Gushikawa City. Time: 5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m. (July 24), 3 p.m. -10 p.m. (25th).

Fireworks: 9:55 p.m. - 10 p.m. (24th and 25th).

Festival highlights: Bon-Dance (8:10 p.m. - 8:40 p.m. on July 24-25), Shi shi Drums Performance (8:40 p.m. - 9:05 p.m. on July 24), Folk Music Concert (9:10 p.m. - 9:50 p.m. on July 24), Lottery (8:45 p.m. - 9 p.m.), Diamantes Music Concert from 9:05 p.m. - 9:55 p.m. on July 25.

Marine Matsuri

Date: July 24 and 25. Location: Ginowan Marina in Ginowan City.

Festival highlights: Cruiser, Yacht, Motor Boat Cruising (free). Yacht class, model yacht handicraft class, the Dragon Boat Race.
