Police release accident report

Results from an Okinawa Prefectural Police half-yearly report released Monday into water-related accidents show fishermen are most at risk of injury or death, with swimming and snorkeling the second most likely cause of accidental death.

According to the report, there were 15 major incidents involving fishermen, which resulted in the accidental death of 11. The number of accidents reported to police of accidents occurring at sea or at a river on the island, came to 26, of which three cases included children, a 1% rise over last year’s figures.

The report said most of the accidents occurred in January, April, May and June, during which time 13 people were rescued. Of the 26 cases, two incidents happened at a river, 24 at sea, and in three cases overall tourists were involved. Of the three tourists one died.
