New Dining Facility to Open on Kadena

Date Posted: 1999-10-01

A new $5.4 million Dining Facility will open October 1 in Bldg. 722 on Davis Avenue on Kadena beginning with the lunch meal. The Phase I Project Dining Facility, with a 4,488 Sq. Ft. dining room, seats over 260 and replaces the old Marshall Dining Facility. Marshall, originally built in the 1950’s, will close after the October 1 breakfast meal.

The Grand Opening of Phase I will take place on October 1 at 10:30 a.m. The schedule of events includes a welcome address by MSgt Tim Huff, a blessing of the facility by Chaplain West, and a ribbon cutting. The event will be followed with lunch and a cake cutting. All personnel are invited to attend. (Please note that those diners who are not an SIK cardholder must pay a surcharge for their meal.) Prizes and giveaways will be awarded randomly throughout the day.

In addition, the new dining facility’s staff will provide a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility on September 30, 8 – 10 a.m. All personnel are invited to attend the tour.

The new facility will house approximately $400,000 worth of new kitchen equipment, boast two attached dining rooms and sport eight 32-inch televisions with cable and VCR capability.

“The new dining facility will have a wider selection of meal items,” says Dining Facility Manager MSgt Ron Jones. “We look at what the clubs and AAFES provide and emulate that. Besides expanding upon what we currently offer, we will have three separate food lines, enabling us to move people through more quickly.”

The new dining facility also boasts its own bakery. In the past, baked goods were brought in to the dining facilities from the Kinser Bakery. A new customer information line has been installed. To find the latest menu information, diners will simply dial 634-3304.

Phase II will consist of tearing down the now closed Johnson Dining Facility on Beeson Ave. to completely rebuild. That new facility is due to reopen in March 2001.
